Power soccer, also known as powerchair football, is a competitive team sport for individuals with disabilities who use power wheelchairs. It is played on a regulation basketball court with two teams of four players each. The objective of the game is to maneuver an oversized soccer ball into the opponent's goal using specially designed powerchairs. Players use their chairs to pass, dribble, shoot the ball, showcasing skill and strategy. Power soccer provides opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in a physically demanding and exciting sport.
The main requirements to play Power Soccer are that you must be ages five and older for those in a power wheelchair or manual wheelchair and can play another adaptive sport. All players must be able to maneuver their wheelchair on their own safely. For most power wheelchair users, it is the only competitive team sport available.
Power soccer is a fast-growing four-wheeled sport in the United States, with over 100 teams and programs, including 50 competitive teams. Power soccer is a prominent international sport, with 27 countries participating, including the United States. The entire list of participating countries is available at https://fipfa.org.
The current competitive fees are $350 per team. Additional travel charges contribute and vary according to the quantity of travel time. The United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA) provides free membership for recreational players. Equipment expenditures vary depending on the player's interest level and their need to operate their chair to the maximum level. Power Soccer is an expensive sport, and dedication is required to promote a team financially and to achieve victory!
A footguard for your chair is required when participating in power soccer. Some soccer organizations provide polycarbonate protectors that can be adapted to suit most chairs with standard footrests, but they are not ideal. Local metal companies can also design and build a chair guard. Power Soccer Shop is the primary equipment shop provider for Power Soccer worldwide, offering a wide choice of equipment for new teams and upgrades to new equipment, including the Strike Force Chair (the Ferrari chair of the sport).
Our team's primary goal is to compete in the MK Battery USPSA Conference Cup tournament. This event is hosted annually in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is the largest tournament event in America. Our second goal is to eventually host a tournament similar to the MK Battery USPSA Conference Cup in the central United States, where teams can get all their games in for the main tournament.
